Jiu Jitsu Belt Stripes and Degrees
Before receiving a new belt color, many practitioners receive stripes as intermediate markers of progress.
White, blue, purple, and brown belts can be divided into degrees within the IBJJF framework, although the adoption of the degree system below black belt can depend on the professor or academy. Black belts have a separate degree structure recognized by the IBJJF.
Stripes can provide useful milestones during the long process of learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
However, a stripe isn't simply a measure of how many classes someone has attended. Training consistency matters, but technical development and the instructor's evaluation are also important.
1. Stripes Mark Progress
Stripes are small markers added to a BJJ belt to recognize progress between belt promotions. They give students short-term milestones while they continue developing techniques, positional awareness, and mat skills.
2. Degrees Vary by Belt and Academy
Within the IBJJF framework, white, blue, purple, and brown belts can have degrees, while black belts follow a separate degree system. However, how degrees and stripes are awarded can vary between academies and instructors.
3. Stripes Reflect More Than Attendance
Earning a stripe is not simply about the number of classes attended. Consistent training is important, but instructors may also consider technical improvement, skill development, knowledge, attitude, and overall performance when evaluating a student's progress.
